Johads developed/revived by Save Aravali

A "Johad" is a simple yet ingenious water conservation structure, typically a small earthen dam or pond, designed to capture and store rainwater. Johads have proven to be a sustainable solution to combat water scarcity. Rainwater runoff is directed into these structures during the monsoon season, allowing it to seep into the ground and replenish the water table. This not only enhances groundwater levels but also profoundly impacts the wildlife. As urbanisation encroaches upon natural habitats, animals often struggle to find clean water sources.

In the midst of the picturesque Aravali range lies a traditional water conservation technique that has not only sustained human life for centuries but has also provided a lifeline to the local wildlife. The practice of building "Johads" has become a beacon of hope in the fight against water scarcity, benefiting both communities and the environment. Johads offer a lifeline to these creatures, ensuring they have access to clean and safe drinking water. From nimble deer to majestic birds, a diverse range of wildlife now finds solace at these rejuvenated oases.

Our Ongoing Efforts:

Save Aravali Trust is committed to the preservation and revitalization of this ancient water management practice. We have developed 21 johads till now. And, with the dedication and support from volunteers, we aim to create 4 Johads every year. In 2023, we created 2 johads in Faridabad Forest, proudly re-developed a Johad in a village named Saanp ki Nangli in Sohna and one johad in Baliawas, Gurugram.

We extend a special thanks to Kailash Bidhuri and Vijay Beniwal from our dedicated water conservation team for leading the water conservation projects. Their leadership, guidance, and expertise have been invaluable in overseeing and managing the creation of Johads, driving our mission forward. Our endeavours would not have been possible without the unwavering dedication of our volunteers. Their hard work, time, and passion have been the driving force behind the creation and maintenance of these vital water sources. We extend our heartfelt gratitude to each volunteer who has lent their hands and hearts to this noble cause.
